About Houston Data Quest

Houston publishes a vast amount of open data, but most of it sits in spreadsheets few people ever read. Houston Data Quest exists to change that. We make civic data approachable, playable, and useful — so a high-schooler in Sunnyside or a homeowner in the Heights can understand how their city works, question the numbers, and take informed action.

Every dataset in the quest comes from the City of Houston's official open data portal at data.houstontx.gov and related public records — 311 service requests, public safety, permits, flooding and drainage, streets, parks, and more. We organize it by topic and department so you can follow the threads that matter to your neighborhood.

Houston Data Quest is led by eight guide characters, each representing a different lens on civic data — the watchdog who hunts red flags, the neighbor focused on local impact, the analyst who loves a clean chart, and more. Your chosen guide shapes the tone of your journey and the missions you're nudged toward, but you're always free to explore everything.

As you browse datasets, confirm red flags, and finish lessons, you earn XP, level up, and unlock badges. Missions break big civic questions into bite-sized steps. The point isn't the points — it's that play keeps you curious long enough to build real data literacy.

We don't just republish data — we evaluate it. Each dataset gets a quality score based on completeness, consistency, and freshness, and automated detectors surface red flags worth verifying. Departments receive a reliability score reflecting the transparency and quality of what they publish. We're an independent educational project and not affiliated with the City of Houston.
